<head>Biography of Virginia Payne</head><p>Virginia Payne (1909-1977) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a graduate of the Schuster-Martin School of Drama in Cincinnati, and earned a bachelor’s degree in literature from the University of Cincinnati. After graduation, she auditioned for and won the role of “Ma Perkins” for the 27-year life of the radio soap opera of the same name. The show was heard on NBC from 1933 to 1949 and on CBS from 1942 to 1960. Between 1942 and 1949, the show was heard simultaneously on both networks. Although there were questions about her youth in the beginning of the show’s run, Payne played the role so well that she became an instant and permanent success. In addition to <emph>Ma Perkins</emph> she was a cast member of other radio soap operas. From 1939 to 1940, she played "Mrs. Kerry Carter" on <emph>The Carters of Elm Street</emph>; from 1940 to 1950, she was in <emph>Light of the World</emph>; and in 1942 she was on CBS and NBC in <emph>Lonely Women</emph>. In the 1930s, Payne became part of an effort to unionize radio performers. She succeeded with a 15-member organization that eventually grew to become the American Federation of Radio Artists (AFRA). She was on the AFRA board from 1940 to 1952. She also participated in merger talks that produced the Television Authority and later the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. When <emph>Ma Perkins</emph> ended in 1960, Payne quickly switched to the theater, playing roles in <emph>Carousel</emph> and <emph>Oklahoma</emph>. She appeared in <emph>Long Days Journey into Night</emph>, <emph>Come Back Little Sheba</emph>, <emph>The Glass Menagerie</emph>, and <emph>Picnic</emph>. She also performed in a variety of roles in <emph>Beckett</emph>, <emph>Life with Father</emph>, <emph>The Mousetrap</emph>, <emph>Right You Are If You Think You Are</emph>, and in a reading of <emph>An Evening with Katherine Mansfield</emph>. She made her Broadway musical debut in 1964 in <emph>Fade Out, Fade In</emph> with Carol Burnett. Also during the 1960s, she was a member of the repertory group at the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas.</p>

<head>Scope and Content</head><p>The collection contains photographs that include publicity stills of Payne, including as "Ma Perkins" and as "Mrs. Kerry Carter;" the <emph>Ma Perkins</emph> cast; Whittier Station where <emph>Ma Perkins</emph> was broadcast; Payne’s New York home; prints of Payne with her family and others at an event celebrating the 45th anniversary of WLW-Radio in 1967; and a rose named after "Ma Perkins." There are seven scrapbooks with publicity stills of Payne, correspondence, fan mail, news and magazine clippings, post cards, programs, and sorority materials. There are also certificates of commendation; a paperback book titled <emph>Whatever Became of…?</emph> (1970) that contains a piece about Payne; and an issue of <emph>Look</emph> magazine (1957) with an article about Payne. Steel-rimmed glasses and wigs from her costume for <emph>Ma Perkins</emph> are also included. Miscellaneous artifacts include a miniature shovel given to Payne in celebration of the ground-breaking ceremony for Houston’s Alley Theatre, a sterling silver box observing <emph>Ma Perkins</emph>' 15th anniversary, and a sterling silver plate dedicated to Payne for the 5000th broadcast of <emph>Ma Perkins</emph>.</p>
