A collection of awards and gifts presented to Edmund P. Sedivy, Sr., for his many community and music education contributions and MSC/MSU symphonic and marching bands memorabilia including scrapbooks and photographs collected by him during his tenure with the music department.

The collection of awards and gifts give a glimpse of the level of appreciation for Sedivy's civic, musical, and educational endeavors. The photographic images, audio-visual material and scrapbooks afford the researcher a sense of the commitment of time and effort by both the band director and the students in touring and providing musical accompaniment to athletic and other activities on campus, across the state of Montana, and beyond.

Edmund P. Sedivy, Sr., (1911-1995) came to Montana State College (now Montana State University) in 1946 and filled many key roles in the growth of the Department of Music and Music Education until his retirement in 1977. For 23 years he was director of bands and for a time also conducted the MSU Civic Symphony. He became known as ''Mr. Music Man'' for his many contributions and dedication to music students. He was also active in many civic bands and was a long-standing member of the Montana Music Educators Association, editing their publication The Cadenza for over 30 years.

Sedivy was active in community affairs, serving 17 years on the Bozeman City Commission, eight of those as mayor. He served on the Montana League of Cities and Towns and the Bozeman Public School Board, belonged to Toastmasters, the Rotary Club, the Men's Garden Club, and the Bozeman Chamber of Commerce Green Coats. He also operated a small farm on Kagy Boulevard. Sedivy died in 1995. A colleague said, in a local newspaper after his death, ''Bozeman was just a better place because of him."

The photographs and negatives in this series include group photos of the Bobcat marching band and the Symphonic Band, as well as some individual and small group performers, twirlers, and drum majors covering a period from about 1940-41 through 1969. Of particular interest is the early band shell at Bogert Park in Bozeman in folder 34 and of the many snapshots which reflect life on the band tours. Some of the photographs were used for the Montana Music Educator's publication
The Cadenza
, others for campus publications as indicated by a mix of images sent to or returned to Sedivy by MSU Publications & News Office staffer Ken Nicholson; these and the group photos may be recorded as negatives in several University Archives collections when requests for campus photography went through the Office of Information and then the MSU Photo Lab. There is some evidence that tour snapshots were taken not only for use by the band historians but to allow participants to order reprints. There is some duplication. For collection reference the folder number and assigned image number for this collection have been penciled on verso of prints.
