Biographical Note

Mary Burnett Kirkwood, 1904–1995, joined the University of Idaho faculty as professor
of painting, composition, and history of painting, a position she held for 40 years.
She earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Montana and a master of
fine arts from the University of Oregon and completed graduate study at the Royal
Art School in Sweden and the College of Art Study Abroad in Paris.

In her March 7, 1977, letter to Franck, Kirkwood writes that in retirement she has
“stuck with her forte, which is figure painting.” She adds, “…many of these
paintings are quite large because I feel most comfortable with big brushes and a big
scale.” Her work was exhibited extensively throughout the Northwest and East Coast,
and she received numerous awards and honors.
