George Thornton Emmons (ethnographer) photographed Niska and Gitksan villages between 1905-1913. Also included are portraits from Kispiox and Kitanmox (Hazelton). The Emmons Collections consists of 39 nitrate negatives and 177 8x10 b/w photographs. Probably the collection initially was a part of the Viola Garfield donation and consisted only of nitrate negatives. 177 8x10 copy prints were made from these negatives and now form the bulk of the Emmons Collection. Many of the copy prints from these negatives are also found in Garfield Volume 15: Tsimshian (Kitsegulka, Kispiox, Kitladamax) which are also in the Native American project (See Native American 3352-3504). The nitrate negatives to these images have been lost and it remains a mystery as to their whereabouts. There are only 39 remaining nitrate negatives, none of which are part of the NA collection. Prints have been made for some and placed in the Emmons Collection; some are not printed and are indicated on the inventory. In addition to the 177 photographic prints and 39 nitrate negatives, there is a small notebook with 42 b/w photographs (some cropped) along with notes by G.T. Emmons. This was apparently also initially part of the Garfield donation. There are also 10 original Emmons envelopes with his comments.
