			<p>James “Jim” Anthony Baenen (July 2, 1938-Oct. 5, 2017) received a B.A. from the
				University of Idaho before getting an M.A. in Anthropology at Washington State
				University in 1965. His WSU thesis dealt with hunting and fishing rights of the Nez
				Perce Indians. Baenen became a professor of Anthropology at Seattle Central
				Community College.</p>

	 <scopecontent encodinganalog="5202_" id="a3"> 
			<p>The collections consists of slides of and relating to Native Americans. Included are
				personal slides as well as commercial slides; these were apparently used both in his
				own research and for instruction purposes. About half of the slides are labeled with
				additional information, often including sources (for the reproductions) or
				dates.</p>

			<p>The slides are housed in slide sheets, each holding up to 20 slides. Most slides each
				are housed in their original sheets. These sheets were combined and organized into
				several series which are organized alphabetically by geographic region. The few
				non-geographic materials, as well as unidentified images, are located at the end. A
				second accession of slides came not in sheets but in boxes; these were placed in
				sheets and grouped according to which box they came from. Dates are given in the
				folder descriptions below only for original photographs, and only where they could
				be determined.</p>

			<p>James Dunne purchased these slides at at Jim Baenen’s estate sale in Lynnwood, WA on
				June 13th, 2019. He donated this collection to the Washington State University
				Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections (MASC) on August 24th,
				2020, where they were retained as UPC 20-02.</p>
			<p>A second set of slides came to WSU via the American Philosophical Society which had
				in turn purchased them from James Dunne on eBay in November 2023.</p>

			<p>University Archivist Mark O’English processed this collection in January, 2021. The
				slides were originally received as six slide carousels (each holding up to 140
				slides), three plastic slide cases (each up to 36 slides), twenty-one small boxes of
				slides (each up to 40 slides), and 22 loose sheets of slides (each up to 20 slides).
				Those not already in slide sheets were rehoused, making every attempt to retain
				their original order. All materials were retained in processing, excepting one sheet
				labeled “dark” which was too dark to be usable, one sheet of Smithsonian exhibit
				photographs, and one sheet of modern and unrelated motorcycle images.</p>
			<p>Additional processing by Will Gregg, Manuscripts Librarian, in 2024. Will interfiled
				and expanded on the order maintained by Mark to accomodate a group of new
				slides.</p>
