Edward J. "Ed" Harris was born on April 24, 1943 to Hubert and Alyce Harris. Raised in Forsyth, Montana, Harris attended the University of Montana in Missoula and graduated with degrees in music and music education in 1966. He then attended the University of Washington and obtained his master's degree. He married Sharon Egge on June 16, 1967. The couple would have one son, Jordan.
Harris taught music in Billings, Montana for 26 years and was awarded the Montana Music Educators Association (MMEA) President’s Award in 2005. He was also editor of the MMEA's publication, the Cadenza. He was active in local musical productions as a director, vocalist, and accompanist. A prolific and successful composer, his "Billings, My City, My Home," became the official city song in 1988. Harris was active in the formation of the Rimrock Opera in 1999 and the Ed Harris Excellence in Musical Direction Award from the Billings Studio Theatre was created in his honor. He was also very involved with the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and the American Lutheran Church, using his talents to lead in music ministry.
Ed Harris passed away on September 17, 2006 from Lou Gehrig's Disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).
This collection contains published and unpublished compositions by Ed Harris including original drafts and notes. Also included are recordings, programs, clippings, awards, and correspondence concerning his numerous published works. Recordings of his various performances and performances of pieces written by him are available in the following formats: digital files, CD, and audio cassette. Harris's work with organizations dedicated to engaging the public with the performing arts, including the Billings Symphony Orchestra and their events as well as the Rimrock Opera (now part of NOVA Center for the Performing Arts), are evident in the form of event planning materials, original compositions, and clippings. There are also materials related to Harris's education at Forsyth High School, the University of Montana, and the University of Washington. Scrapbooks he kept with various report cards, memorabilia, programs, and clippings from his own performances as a director, vocalist, and accompanist are included. There are also biographical pieces from his various performances, and a personal narrative by the family adds to these official biographical materials. The collection also includes photographs of various events taken by or of Harris.

This collection was received as two accessions and has since been slightly rearranged. This collection was arranged according to the original order and the descriptions provided by Sharon Harris. Original titles to the folders have been retained where possible. The folders are arranged in alphabetical order by title of the composition. Originally compositions were in two categories: Works In Print and Works Not In Print. Works Not In Print were further broken down into Published and Unpublished Works because that is how they were described by Sharon Harris. In each folder containing a composition there is a form written by Sharon Harris providing context. Those folders that do not contain a composition often had context provided by Sharon Harris via sticky note. The sticky notes have been removed for preservation purposes but a facsimile was retained in the sticky note's original location. Those materials that are not compositions are also in alphabetical order by title of folder to keep arrangement consistent. The original inventory has been retained. Duplicates of some materials have been retained for possible future exhibitions.

This series was originally separated into two categories by Sharon Harris, "Works In Print" and "Works Not In Print". The processing archivist decided to break "Works Not In Print" into two new categories "Published Works" and "Unpublished Works" because that is how the materials were described in the context provided by Sharon Harris. In each folder containing a composition there is a form providing context created by Sharon Harris. Some of the folders contain correspondence concerning the composition or memorabilia associated with a performance of the composition. Oversized materials were removed and placed in larger containers. Sticky notes were removed for preservation purposes, but a copy of each note remains in its folder. Additional notes for some of the compositions were provided by Sharon Harris. Direct transcriptions or paraphrases of these notes are prefaced with "Sharon Harris:"

Sharon Harris: This is a working manuscript. Ed was considering a handbell accompaniment. The piece was dedicated to Helen Perey. She was Ed's high school choir director in Forsyth, Montana. Helen Perey was very influential in Ed's vocal development and was always supportive of anything he did musically.

Sharon Harris: Eugene Weigel, Ed's composition teacher at the University of Montana (formerly Montana State University) arranged for this to be performed for the first time at an Episcopal Church in Missoula, Montana in April of 1964. This was the end of Ed's third year as a student at the University of Montana. Professor Weigel is credited with teaching Ed the fine art of original manuscript.

Sharon Harris: Commissioned by St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Billings, Montana in honor of Reverend Paul Krebill, Pastor. There is a recording of Ed playing this piece on the electronic keyboard in 1994. Bob and Mary Wood, members of the church, and part of the choir initially contacted Ed for this piece. They were personal friends of Ed and Sharon Harris. The piece was revised in both 1993 and 1994
Sharon Harris: Ed studied the cello with Florence Reynolds one quarter at the University of Montana. This was a class exercise and was performed during a student concert. When Ed wrote this he was thinking of the composer, Villa Lobos.

Sharon Harris: Con Carey on the University of Montana Music Faculty commissioned this piece for the performing ensemble UM Jubileers to sing. Ed used a special pencil to do the manuscript so it could be copied. He indicated that it was a complex process.
Sharon Harris: Requested by Sandi Skogmo for her wedding to Randy Rabas June 11, 1983. The wedding was in Billings at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Sandi was the organist at LCGS and Ed was the director of worship and music. Written in several keys with revisions in 1982, 1996, and 2006. Ed sang this piece at the Rabas wedding for which it was composed on June 11, 1983. Christie Hageman was the soloist during the tribute to Ed Harris concert at the Alberta Bair Theatre, Billings, Montana, January 1, 2006. Christie is now an opera singer residing in Denver, CO.

Sharon Harris: Notes by Ed indicate he was working on narration for this piece in 1981 for an unknown purpose. Another excellent example of Ed's manuscript skills. This was used as incidental music for the University of Montana Children's production of "Jack and the Beanstalk". The University of Montana must have produced "Jack..." in 1965 when Ed was a music major.

Sharon Harris: In 1966 Ed was hired by Miss Montana, Nancy Ann McLeod of Kalispell, to do an orchestration of "Happily Ever After" from the musical "Once Upon A Mattress", an arrangement she requested for the Miss America Pageant held in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Miss McLeod, a vocalist, was not among the final 10 contestants and Ed never heard it performed. At the time, Carol Burnett was starring in the Broadway musical featuring this piece and the music was not available. Ed indicated that he sought permission from Chappell and Co, Inc. to do the arrangement, but it was not received. Many years later, Ed related that the arrangement would be considered illegal. He wrote out the score from a piano transcription.

This suite was originally commissioned by the Montana Music Teachers Association. The original suite included: Touches of Sweet Harmony; Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day; The Marriage of True Minds; Tomorrow and Tomorrow; For Thy Sweet Love Remembered; and All the World's a Stage. The Everett Choral asked that "My Crown is My Heart" and "What a Piece of Work Is Man" be added to the suite for their performance in 2007. These materials were originally in a binder. This piece was written for Dave Reynolds who was on the Rocky Mountain College's music faculty. "How Can I Keep From Singing" was performed at Rocky Mountain College in 1996.
The three pieces are: "Crusader's Hymn", "Trumpet Voluntary", and "How Can I Keep From Singing". They were commissioned by Sentinel Mountain Press in Missoula, Montana. James Eversole, a former University of Montana music faculty member and director of bands, was the publisher there.
Sharon Harris: This piece was written for Ed's son, Jordan, who was six years old and always asking "Why" about things. Jordan never liked simple explanations so n answer led to another "Why" question.
Sharon Harris: This piece was dedicated to Wallace Stadfeld who was the director of the choir at Lincoln Junior High in Billings, Montana. Ed and Wally were close friends and taught music together.

Ed wrote the lyrics but the music is by Bill Stains. Ed composed a choral setting for unison or 2-part choir. Ed was always fascinated by clever lyrics.
Sharon Harris: The SAB version of this piece was published by Hinshaw Music, Inc. in 1979. Hinshaw published the SATB version in 1980. This work remains in print and has always been Ed's best seller. It is performed frequently. Ed was notified by the choir director Michael Connelly of St. Pius X Church in Corpus Christi, TX that this piece would be performed on November 13, 2006 in Rome at the Vatican for Pope Benedict. Ed passed away on September 17, 2006 but did know about this special performance.

Sharon Harris: Ed dedicated this piece to the paster of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Billings, Montana, Reverend Ronald Johnstad. This has become the signature choral anthem for the congregation and they consider it "theirs".

Oakley (1946-2006) a neurosurgeon in Billings, Montana who was tragically killed piloting his own airplane the Monday after Easter in 2006. Ed began working on this piece within the week of Dr. Oakley's death. The doctor was a member at the American Lutheran Church where Ed was the director of music ministry.

Sharon Harris: This piece was dedicated to Art and Anna Mae Brandvold. Art was the supervisor of music in Billings School District #2; his wife was an elementary teacher and Ed worked with them both. They are now deceased.
This series contains correspondence between Harris and his many publishers. This is not all the correspondence in the collection because in many cases letters concerning a specific composition were kept in that composition's respective folder by Harris.
The series is arranged alphabetically by publisher.
Extensive correspondence related to getting these to publication. These appear to be an evaluation of what Harris self-published a[sic] "Fun Songs" for his elementary classroom and for sale to other teachers.

These files are a mix of compositions Harris created using Finale music software, personal documents and business documents. All of the files were created on a Macintosh machine. Some of the works are available in multiple file formats.
During the transfer from Harris's home computer to the Archives and Special Collections, all of the files that could be converted to PDFs were converted for preservation reasons. Some file names contain the date of their last modification from Harris's original machine. The original files were retained when possible. The files were arranged alphabetically by composition. In some cases there were multiple folders for a composition. The arranging archivist combined all folders of the same composition into one folder. The sub-folders retained their original name and hierarchy. At the highest level in the folder hierarchy some folders were renamed to clarify the composition within. Sharon Harris: Ed's last issue of Cadenza. He published a editor and business manager. Ed carved the pumpkin and then took the photograph at Albertson's grocery store in Billings. Notes on page 5 describe it. Ed's Nom De Plume was Ward James but few, if any, knew that! Page 20: President's Award, Page 49: About his music, Page 64: Ed notes."
