Edward Abbey was a noted author and environmental activist, much of whose work focused on the desert Southwest. Edward Abbey (1927-1989) was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania. After attending the University of New Mexico, Abbey studied as a Fulbright scholar at Edinburgh University and as a Wallace Stegner Creative Writing Fellow at Stanford University. Abbey became a teacher, a writer, an advocate of environmentalism, and a vocal critic of public land policies. His writings, especially his novel The Monkey Wrench Gang are still used as inspiration by radical environmental groups. His book, Desert Solitaire, is a partial autobiography centering on Abbey's years as a park ranger at Arches National Monument in Utah from 1956-1957. He died March 14, 1989 at the age of 62.
