      <bioghist encodinganalog="5450_">
         <p>Professor of Chinese history and philosophy, University of Washington.</p>
         <p>Kung-Chuan Hsiao was born 1897. He graduated from the National Tsinghun (China) in 1920. He received a B.A. in 1922, and an M.A. in 1923 from Missouri; and a Ph.D. in 1926 from Cornell University. His specialties were philosophy and history of Chinese thought. Hsaio was a professor of Chinese in the Far East Department at University of Washington, 1948-1968; and professor emeritus for Eastern and Russian Institute/Institute for Comparative and Foreign Area Studies, 1952-1968. He is an author of his autobiography,"In Quest of Learning," "Collection of Poems," and the manuscript "Rural China - Imperial control in the 19th Century," a Social, political and economic analysis of 19th c. life in rural China. Hsaio died in 1981.</p>
