Edmund J. Rooney (1924-2007) was a newspaper writer and investigative reporter for the Chicago Daily News from 1952 to 1978. During World War II, Rooney was assigned to work as a writer-reporter with the U.S. Army Stars and Stripes in Italy. After the war, he wrote hundreds of major news stories, including stories on the Montgomery to Selma, Alabama civil rights march of 1965. In 1971 Rooney covered the Attica, New York prison uprisings. He reported extensively on the Democratic convention violence in Chicago in 1968 and was the only reporter to interview convicted serial killer Richard Speck in 1976. Rooney also worked as a journalism professor at Loyola University.
Collection contains correspondence; over 1,400 newspaper articles written by Rooney for the Chicago Daily News; reporters notebooks and other notes kept by Rooney; biographical information; a personal resume written when the Chicago Daily News closed; photographs; Loyola University course outlines; court reports; memos; news releases; and legal documents.
There are no access restrictions on the materials for research purposes, and the collection is open to the public.
