Minutes and
reports from the Citizens' Committee on State Finance and the Tax Research
Committee of the Allied Daily Newspapers of Washington, a group of Washington
state newspaper publishers who came together to study state finances, the
causes of the current problems and the impending deficits in the state budget.
Also included is information on the original Initiative 178 known as the
Citizens' Public Assistance Act of 1950.
The Allied Daily Newspapers of Washington was a trade organization
composed of 22 daily newspapers representing more than 98% of Washington
state's daily newspaper circulation. The Tax Research Committee was created by
formal action of the general membership in open session at the association's
spring meeting held in Seattle, May 13-14, 1949. The organization also created
the Citizens' Committee on State Finance to study the state budget.
