		  Haida language</abstract></did><bioghist encodinganalog="5450_"><p>Carol Eastman (1941-1997) was born and raised in Boston,
		  Massachusetts. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of
		  Massachusetts before going on to study linguistics in graduate school. After
		  receiving her Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Wisconsin, Eastman
		  began her career at the University of Washington in 1967 as an assistant
		  professor in anthropology. During her UW career, she also served as an adjunct
		  professor in linguistics, women’s studies and music; chair of anthropology;
		  chair of the Faculty Senate; and dean of the Graduate School. She published
		  more than 100 scholarly books and articles in her 30-year academic career.</p></bioghist><scopecontent><p>Linguistic research on the Haida language. Printed list of 500 Haida
		  utterances and their translations; six microfiche of researcher’s notes; four
		  audio cassette recordings of Haida native speakers; 1977. Contains data on
		  Haida language derived from speakers Elizabeth Edwards, Alice Kitkoon, Louis
		  Kitkoon, Erma Lawrence, Mr. James Edenso, Sylvester Peele, and Helen
		  Sanderson.</p></scopecontent><odd encodinganalog="500" id="a5" type="hist"><p>Haida, or Xaat Kíl, is the ancestral language of the Haida people. The
		  traditional home of the Haidas is Haida Gwaii (also known as Queen Charlotte
		  Island) off the west coast of what is now British Columbia, Canada. A few
		  hundred years ago, some Haidas moved north to what is now Prince of Wales
		  Island in southeast Alaska. Today, the four main Haida villages are Masset and
		  Skidegate, both on Haida Gwaii, and Hydaburg and Kasaan, on Prince of Wales.
		  There are also small populations of the Haida people living in larger towns and
		  cities up and down the Pacific Coast; including Juneau, Ketchikan, Vancouver,
