         <p>James John was born in 1809 in Donnelsville, Ohio. His parents died, leaving two sons and a daughter, who were raised by their grandparents. In the late 1830s, James John went west after his wife, Lucinda, died and his siblings stayed in the Midwest. He reached Oregon in 1842 and was a trapper. He settled in Linnton in 1844. He began two farms and in 1846 he moved to set up his claim in the city now called St. Johns.</p>
