Scope and Content

The collection contains biographical information, publications on aviation and aviators, and certificates and awards given to Marshall. There is Marshall’s personal correspondence (1945) and work-related correspondence (1933-1973). Also included are materials pertaining to the Conquistadores del Cielo, a club of top aviation executives. There is also a file of memos, orders and correspondence pertaining to Marshall’s association with the U.S. Marine Corps. The collection also includes a memo, letter and two appendices relating to the role Lockheed Corp. played in World War II combat and a file about soundproofing at Lockheed. Additionally, there are memos and correspondence pertaining to the Truman Committee, formally known as the Senate Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program, a bipartisan special committee formed in 1941 to find and correct problems in U.S. war production. Photographs in the collection portray Marshall and other aviators, as well as various airplanes and a 1945 retreat of the Conquistadores held in Wyoming. There is also a scrapbook related to Marshall’s career and aviation. Additionally, there is a membership list and photographs of the Quiet Birdmen, a secret U.S. club founded in 1921 for male aviators. The collection also includes Marshall’s pilot log.
