The Payroll Department at Central Washington University has its roots in the school's Business Office of the 1960s, and the Payroll Supervisor who served there. The department currently resides as an independent office in the Division of Business and Financial Affairs.

Included with the wages of Central Washington College of Education employees are the wages of student employees.

Central Washington University began as the Washington State Normal School in 1891. In 1937, the school was rechristened the Central Washington College of Education. In 1961, the school became Central Washington State College and, finally, in 1977, Central Washington University.
