                August 17, 1959 earthquake which occurred on the Madison River in the Hegben Lake

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Mary Virginia Walker was born in Crawfordsville, Iowa on April 5, 1899, the daughter
                of William and Viola May Walker. The family moved to Bozeman, Montana in 1912 where
                Mary attended the local schools and graduated from the Gallatin County High School
                in 1918. She married Herbert Ellis Thompson in 1921, and worked as a post office
                clerk and baker. She was living in Bozeman during the 1959 Madison River earthquake
                and took a keen interest in the topic, collecting a number of items relating to the
                disaster. She died in Bozeman on August 23, 1988.</p>

            <p>The Virginia W. Thompson scrapbook contains primarily newspaper and magazine
                clippings from a number of publications all pertaining to the August 17, 1959
                earthquake which occurred on the Madison River in the Hegben Lake area. A number of
                laid-in items, including whole issues of the <title render="italic">Boezman Daily
                    Chronicle</title>, the <title render="italic">Billings Gazette</title>, and the
                    <title render="italic">Great Falls Tribune</title> are also in the
                collection.</p>

            <p>An original scrapbook containing newspaper and magazine clippings pertaining to the

                to Montana State University by her on September 5, 1973. </p>
