      <p>Howard R. Woodward served as Quartermaster Sergeant in Company L of
		  the Second Battalion of the Washington Volunteer Infantry in the Spanish
		  American War.</p>

      <p>The collection consists of three letters written to I. C. Libby from
		  Woodward while in San Francisco, CA preparing to depart for military duty in
		  the Philippines. He recalls some boredom at his post and shares a few spiritual
		  and moral insights.</p>
