Wildlife resources studies at the University of Idaho, a key focus of the College of Natural Resources since its early years, were developed significantly by Dr. Kenneth E. Hungerford during his tenure. The department, now called the Department of Fish and Wildlife Sciences, benefited from Dr. Hungerford's varied research pursuits, support of graduate students, and administrative contributions.

Kenneth E. Hungerford was born in 1916 in Madison, Wisconsin. During his youth, the Hungerford family moved to Moscow, Idaho, where he graduated high school in 1934. Kenneth Hungerford enrolled at the University of Idaho, graduating with a BS in Forestry in 1938. He continued his studies at the University of Connecticut, where he earned a master's degree in Wildlife Management in 1940, and at the University of Michigan, where he earned his PhD in Wildlife Resources Management in 1952.

Following the completion of his master's degree, Kenneth Hungerford and his wife, Gayle (nee Partner), lived in southern Idaho, where Hungerford worked for the Idaho Fish and Game Department and the Fish and Wildlife Service.

During World War II, Hungerford expanded on his long interest in radio communication, working as an instructor with the U.S. Navy Radio Training School, hosted at the University of Idaho. He moved from instructor to director by the end of the war. The school ultimately trained about 4000 radio operators. Hungerford was drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1945 and was discharged in 1946.

Dr. Hungerford returned to Moscow to teach at the University of Idaho in the College of Forestry. His research interests covered the ruffed grouse, pocket gophers, research instruments, forest diseases, and many other areas of wildlife and natural resources. Hungerford also worked internationally, advising on environmental issues in Taiwan and New Zealand. While back home he collaborated with agencies and mentored students. He held leadership roles, served on university and civic committees, and stayed active in professional and local organizations.

Following his retirement in 1978, Kenneth Hungerford became active in the University of Idaho Retirees Association. He died in 2008 at the age of 92.
