Marjorie Shostak (1945-1996), from Brooklyn (New York), was an anthropologist, author, and teacher. She earned a BA in literature from Brooklyn College. Although she never officially received a degree in anthropology, she is known for her anthropological work with the people of the Kalahari region of southwest Africa. The focus of her work is the gender dynamics within their soceities. Throughout her life, she was a vocal advocate for the women's rights movement. In 1983, she became a research associate at the Institute for Liberal Arts at Emory University.
