        <bioghist encodinganalog="5450_"><head>Biographical Note:</head>
<p>Margaret Jo Osler was born on November 27, 1942 in New York City, New York to Abraham G. and Sonia <emph render="italic">Fellner</emph> Osler. The son of Russian immigrants – whose surname was originally spelled Osofsky – Abraham Osler was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1911. He completed a Bachelor’s degree at the City College of New York in 1931, and a Master’s of Science (1933) and PhD (1948) in Bacteriology at Columbia University in New York City, New York. Osler married Sonia Fellner in 1938. Born in Poland in 1912, Sonia attended Hunter College in New York City, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1933. She went on to complete a PhD in Psychology at Johns Hopkins University in 1954.</p>
<p>Both Abraham and Sonia fell under the scrutiny of the intermittent “Red Scares” of the 1930s through the 1950s. In the 1930s, Abraham was fired from a position at the Bronx Hospital for trying to organize a union among hospital personnel (the workers did eventually unionize as Service Employees International Union, Local 1199). Sonia was called before the <extref show="new" actuate="onrequest" href="http://aspace.library.jhu.edu/repositories/3/resources/549" role="text/html">House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in 1958</extref> to testify regarding alleged Communists working for the New York City Housing Authority, by whom Sonia had been employed from the late 1930s until 1949.</p>
<p>Margaret Jo Osler – who preferred to go by Maggie, and who joked that her middle name, Jo, was a tribute to Joseph Stalin – graduated from Forest Park High School in Baltimore, Maryland in 1959. From 1959 to 1963, she attended Swarthmore College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. Osler went on her earn her M.A. and PhD in the History and Philosophy of Science from Indiana University in 1966 and 1968, respectively. She completed her doctoral thesis, <emph render="italic">John Locke and Some Philosophical Problems in the Science of Boyle and Newton</emph>, under the supervision of historian of science Richard S. Westfall, best known for his biography of Isaac Newton, <emph render="italic">Never at Rest</emph>.</p>
<p>In 1968, immediately after completing her studies at Indiana, Osler was hired by Oregon State University (OSU) as an Assistant Professor in the History of Science, and General Science. She left OSU in 1972, and went on to teach at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California (1970-1974), and Wake Forest University (1974-1975) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, before finding her permanent academic home at the University of Calgary in 1975, where she taught History of Science (1975-2010) and Philosophy (1998-2008).</p>
<p>A prolific author, Osler wrote two books – <extref show="new" actuate="onrequest" href="https://search.library.oregonstate.edu/primo-explore/fulldisplay?docid=CP71177408970001451&amp;context=L&amp;vid=OSU&amp;search_scope=everything&amp;tab=default_tab&amp;lang=en_US" role="text/html"><emph render="italic">Divine Will and the Mechanical Philosophy: Gassendi and Descartes on Contingency and Necessity in the Created World</emph></extref>, and <extref show="new" actuate="onrequest" href="https://search.library.oregonstate.edu/primo-explore/fulldisplay?docid=CP71172997760001451&amp;context=L&amp;vid=OSU&amp;search_scope=everything&amp;tab=default_tab&amp;lang=en_US" role="text/html"><emph render="italic">Reconfiguring the World: Nature, God, and Human Understanding from the Middle Ages to Early Modern Europe</emph></extref> – edited four others, and published over 125 articles, essays, and reviews in prominent journals including <emph render="italic">The British Journal for the History of Philosophy, Isis, </emph>and<emph render="italic"> Studies in History and Philosophy of Science</emph>. In addition to her published works, Osler wrote at least as many unpublished papers and essays that she presented at various symposia and conferences. Much of her work focused on the scientific revolution - specifically on religion and its connection to early science, with an emphasis on the work of scientists and philosophers Pierre Gassendi, Robert Boyle, and Isaac Newton.</p>
<p>Osler was active in a number of academic societies, especially the History of Science Society, for which she served as Secretary from 2001 until her death. She also served as President of the Canadian Society of the History and Philosophy of Science from 1987 to 1990, and as editor for the <emph render="italic">Journal of the History of Philosophy</emph>.</p>
<p>Margaret Osler died of pancreatic cancer September 15, 2010 at the age of 69, just three months after the publication of her second book, <emph render="italic">Reconfiguring the World: Nature, God, and Human Understanding in Early Modern Europe</emph>. She was predeceased by both her parents, and her life companion, Dr. Betty Flagler.</p>

<p>Series 3, Professional Activities, documents Osler's institutional affiliations and professional academic activities and includes institutional records from the universities where Osler worked; lecture notes and syllabi that Osler prepared for her courses; and materials related to the professional conferences Osler attended.</p>
<p>Series 4, Subject Files and Research Materials, contains much of the raw data - typescripts, notes, publications, and a small amount of correspondence - that Osler used in developing her own research and writing. One highlight of the collection is Osler's extensive, though not complete, translation of French philosopher, priest, astronomer, and mathematician Pierre Gassendi's <emph render="italic">Syntagma Philosophicum </emph>(<emph render="italic">Philosophical Treatise</emph>), found in Series 5. Series 6 contains manuscripts of articles and speeches written by Margaret Osler, as well as reprints of her published papers, her reviews of the writings of other scholars, and materials related to the books that Osler wrote and edited.</p>
<p>The photographs in Series 7 include images of Osler, her family, friends, colleagues and travels. The extended family photos in this series primarily document Sonia Osler’s extended family, including parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Many of the photographs documenting international travel are of Abraham and Sonia Osler; many of the images of domestic trips document the Osler family in places such as Jasper, Wyoming; Troy, Montana; and the John Day Fossil Beds in Oregon.</p>

<p>A wide variety of keepsakes, personal documents, and other biographical records are organized into Series 1, including Osler’s Master’s and PhD diplomas from Indiana University, elementary school work, and the literary zine of the Forest Park High School’s Scribbler’s Club, <emph render="italic">The Inklings</emph>. Of particular interest in this series are journals and programs of the Downtown Community School, an experimental, cooperative, and racially-integrated school located in the Manhattan borough of New York City, and founded in 1944. Also of note are brochures and Counselor-in-Training “yearbooks,” or manuals, for Camp Woodland, the summer camp Osler attended as a young girl and teenager. Established in 1939 and in operation until 1962, Camp Woodland was located in the Woodland Valley of the Catskill Mountains near Phoenicia, New York. Founded by folklorist and educational reformer Norman Studer and his wife Hannah, Woodland was “interracial and coeducational,” and was founded on the premise that camp can be a place where “city children strike deep roots in country soil.” To that end, campers made frequent field trips into nearby Catskill communities, where they learned folk songs, and listened to local folk tales. The camp’s annual Folk Festival has been credited as an inspiration for the Woodstock Music Festival, and has connections to several well-known folk singers, including Janis Ian and Pete Seeger.</p>

<p>Osler's correspondence is arranged into three sub-series: Sub-series 1. General, 1968-2010; Sub-series 2. Professional, 1967-2009; and Sub-series 3. Personal, 1948-2003. They are generally arranged chronologically within these sub-series. The General Correspondence sub-series includes thank you notes and holiday cards; letters of recommendation and requests for letters of recommendation; correspondence from publishers regarding her own work, or the work of others; and History of Science Society newsletters. The Professional correspondence sub-series documents Osler’s interaction with fellow historians of science, such as Dr. Paul Farber and Dr. Richard Westfall; her employers, including the University of Calgary, Oregon State University, Harvey Mudd College, and Wake Forest University; and with one of her publishers, the Cambridge University Press. Also documented in this sub-series is an offer of employment by the University of California, Berkley, and correspondence regarding Osler’s acceptance of a Visiting Erskine Fellowship in the School of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. The personal correspondence sub-series is comprised entirely of letters between Margaret and her parents, Abraham and Sonia. A number of the letters dating between 1951 and 1957 were written by Osler and her parents while she was away at Camp Woodland.</p>
<p>There are several letters of note in the Personal correspondence sub-series. First, is a letter written by Abraham to Osler on September 30, 1960, in which Abraham describes the “anonymous” objections of his and Sonia’s prospective neighbors in Ruxton, Maryland, namely that “we might a) move to Ruxton, b) thereby becoming their neighbors, c) thereby lowering their property value.” A second letter, written by Osler to her parents on April 20, 1970, discusses the anti-war riots happening on the campus of the University of California-Berkeley, including the use of tear gas.</p>

<p>Series 7 is comprised of 1036 photographs and 814 negatives of Osler, her family, friends, colleagues and travels, both foreign and domestic. The extended family photos in this series primarily document Sonia Osler’s extended family, including parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. An image of the main square of Pruchnik, Poland, Sonia Osler’s birthplace, is included. An image of Abraham’s mother, Fanny Osofsky (Osler), is also included.</p>
<p>Many of the photographs documenting international travel are of Abraham and Sonia Osler on trips in Sardinia in 1960, and Poland in 1961; Macchu Picchu in 1971; with the staff of the Bacteriology and Immunology Department at the University of Campinas in Sao Paolo, Brazil in the 1970s; Tokyo and Nara, Japan (1971); and Tibet (1997). The Osler family appear to have spent a number of vacations camping and / or hiking, and many of their domestic trips document trips to destinations such as Jasper, Wyoming and Troy, Montana; and Joseph Canyon and the John Day Fossil Beds in Oregon. Several of these trips include Margaret’s life companion Betty Flagler and her family.</p>
<p>Subjects in this series also include: Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania; images of OSU History Professor Dr. Lisa Sarasohn; Claremont, California; and Osler’s childhood pet, Cleo (in box-folders 48.9 and 50.6).</p>
<p>Of note in this series are images documeting Sonia Osler's work with the New York City Housing Authority in the 1940s (Box-folder 48.09). Included are images of Sonia Osler with Housing Authority colleagues Sara Dolgin, Rose Miller, and Blanche Adlerskim (?) in 1940. Also included are three images documenting a visit then-New York City Mayor William O'Dwyer made to the Jacob Riis Housing Project in 1949. Located in New York City's East Village and completed in 1949, the project consists of 19 buildings containing a total of just under 1200 units. The project was named for photographer Jacob Riis, whose photographs revealed the sub-standard living conditions of tenement dwellers in New York City. These three images were taken by Housing Authority photographer L. Marinoff</p>
