Biography of Anne C. Mears

Anne C. Mears moved to Laramie, Wyoming in 1949 with her husband, Brainerd Mears Jr., so he could join the University of Wyoming’s Geology Department faculty. Anne was born in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1926 and she graduated from Vassar College in New York in 1947 where she majored in Art History. She augmented her degree by taking classes in life drawing, basic form, and sculpture. Anne attended the Rhode Island School of Design from 1947-1948. In 1954, under the tutelage of Robert Russin, Anne received her Master of Art degree. Her main project for her master’s was the creation of the bas-relief which can be seen on the front of the United Presbyterian Church on 11th Street and Grand Avenue in Laramie, Wyoming. Mears also illustrated Clarice Whittenburg’s 4th grade textbook, “Wyoming’s People,” published in 1958, as well as, her husband’s introductory geology text, “The Changing Earth,” which was first published in 1970 by Van Nostrand Reinhold.
