  		<p>Eastern State Hospital was founded in 1891 in Medical Lake Washington, located about 20 miles southwest of Spokane.  As of 2016, it remains in operation.</p>

  		<p>Marvin D. Boland was a commercial photographer who moved to Tacoma in 1915 and remained there until his death in 1950.</p>

	 	<p>85 photographs taken in 1938 of the Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake, Washington.  The photographs were taken by M.D. Boland, of Tacoma, Washington.  Each photograph is numbered and labeled.  They document interiors and exteriors of facilities, and medical equipment.  Group photos of staff and employee workspaces are also included, although no individuals are named.  There are no patient photographs.</p>
