Hadley is a former smelter and sawmill town on Lyman Anchorage on the
north side of the Kasaan Peninsula on Prince of Wales Island. The town was
named for "uncle" John Hadley who built the first cabin on the site and was
said to have been the first man to stake a mining claim on the Kasaan
Peninsula. Settlers built a sawmill there in 1903. The smelter at Hadley
belonged to the Alaska Smelting and Refining Company. It consisted of a blast
furnace, sampling mill, coal and coke bins, ore bunkers, boiler room, engine
house and an electric-light plant. Smelting operations began December 5, 1905.
The plant was closed in September, 1907 however ore continued to be shipped
through Hadley to smelters elsewhere. The sawmill burned in 1915 and a fire
closed the principal mine in 1918.
