Broken Moon Press was a small independent press originally founded by John Ellison and a group of friends in 1982 during his time as a college student, first as a small letterpress venture for publishing chap books of poetry and short stories written by Ellison's friends. The name Broken Moon originally came from a line of poetry written by a friend of Ellison. Co-publisher, Lesley Link, who had a background in text-book publishing, joined the press in 1987 during its "re-founding" into a small trade house, after the two met while working as editors at Microsoft. Ellison first intended Broken Moon to be a fine-edition press encompassing poetry and manuscripts, but later after Link’s joining the two shifted the press towards being a private trade press with a focus in international literature. The duo operated Broken Moon Press in addition to their day jobs with Microsoft. In their own words, Broken Moon press was dedicated to publishing international literature that promotes social, awareness, cooperation, and improved human understanding in addition to viewing booking as a collaboration between publisher, writer, artist, designer, and trader. Ellison and Link viewed the role of a publisher as that of a conduit, encouraging ideas and supporting creative activity. During its lifetime, Broken Moon Press won a variety of literary and publishing awards, participated in different events such as Bumbershoot, and published at their peak about 12 titles per year. Due to financial difficulties, Broken Moon Press closed between 1996-1997.
