The Department of Residence Living was formed in 1968 by the Washington State
University Student Affairs Division. Its purpose focused on programming and living
environment matters at dormitories, fraternity and sorority houses, and university
apartments, excluding those used for family housing. This office had oversight of
residence hall government, social activity, and discipline. It also was a laision
with the Housing and Food office of the University. The staff of Residence Living
consisted of a central office and the live-in resident directors and advisors who
are located in the respective dormitories.

In 1987, the Department changed its name to Residence Life and it was repositioned in
the university's organizational scheme, resulting in closer ties to the housing and
food service departments, although remaining within Student Affairs division. Duncan
Dunn Hall, designed by Stanley Smith, University Architect, was built in 1926.
Called New Dormitory originally, around 1935 it was named after Adam Duncan Dunn,
the first alumnus to serve on the Board of Regents. It was planned and used as a
women's residence.
