Dr. Joseph Benson Fowler was born April 3, 1914, in Tooele, Utah to Benjamin A. and Rose Crowther Fowler. Fowler graduated from Ogden High School in 1932, Weber College in 1934, the University of Utah in 1937, and the University of Louisville Medical School in 1941. During World War II, Fowler served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy, and held the rank of lieutenant commander. In 1949, he served his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. He then joined the staff at St. Mark's Hospital. Fowler pursued his medical career in the field of emergency medicine, and took additional training at Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia. In 1971, as president of the medical staff, he was instrumental in establishing the emergency medical department in St. Mark's Hospital, and served as its director for a short time. In 1973, he moved to Oneonta, where he was instrumental in establishing the emergency department at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital. He served as its director through 1977. In 1978, he developed and directed the emergency department in the Sullivan County General Hospital in Harris. His last position before retirement was with the New York State Workers' Compensation Board as a medical examiner. Fowler passed away on January 10, 2002.
