            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Nicholas Groesbeck Smith, Jr. was born on April 4, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Florence Gay and Nicholas Groesbeck Smith. He graduated from East High School in 1944 and was a Cadet Major in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). Smith served as a Seaman First Class in the United States Navy during World War II and was a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force Reserve in 1951. He married Marion Burrows on November 22, 1950; together, they had seven children.</p>
			
			<p>After his military service, Smith attended the University of Utah, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1951. He received an Master of Business Administration from New York University in 1952. Smith spent his career in finance, where he held a variety of positions, including: Vice President of Edward L. Burton and Company (1954-1970), President of Burrows Smith and Company (1970-1981), and Senior Vice President of Prudential Securities (1981-1992). He also served as financial advisor to various governmental organizations in Utah and Nevada. In addition to his career in finance, Smith was a board member of the Intermountain Sexual Abuse Treatment Center, President of the Salt Lake Council of Foreign Relations, and served on the Executive Committee for the Utah Chapter for the Prevention of Child Abuse. </p>
			
			<p>A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Smith served a mission in South Africa in 1950. He served as a Temple Square Guide for 11 years and was a member of the Salt Lake Stake High Council. </p>

            <p>The Nicholas Groesbeck Smith, Jr. photograph collection consists of 1 box. 16 of the images in the collection are digital only. They were scanned from prints affixed to Smith's journal and the originals remain in the <extref linktype="simple" role="text/html" show="new" actuate="onRequest" href="https://archiveswest.orbiscascade.org/ark:80444/xv41076">Nicholas Groesbeck Smith, Jr. autobiography (ACCN 2081)</extref> collection in the Manuscripts Division. The photograph collection contains 1 loose photograph print that was transferred from the Manuscript Division. Subjects include informal photographs of unidentified groups of children and people, perhaps family of Nicholas Goresbeck Smith, Jr., and studio photographs of women in formal dress. The loose photograph is an image of San Francisco, California. The images date from approximatley 1900 to 1943.</p>
