This collection is made up of diverse documents,
chiefly of Spanish colonial origin, dealing with Spanish colonial history,
specifically in Mexico.

This collection is made up of diverse documents, chiefly of Spanish colonial origin,
purchased for the State College of Washington (later Washington State University)
Libraries by J. Horace Nunemaker (1897-1949), former chair of the Foreign Languages
Department of WSC. The collection deals with Spanish colonial history, specifically
in Mexico, and consists of legal documents, works on the politics of Spain, and
biographies, and correspondence dealing with such matters as Inquisition trials, the
Mexican Congress, and piracy. Included is a manuscript on the procedures for the
nomination of representatives to the Mexican Congress of 1823, and letters of
Leonardo Saldaña regarding Viceroy Juan de Palafox.
The collection has been arranged by related subject and in chronological order.
The *Edicto General de Fe. (Box 1, Folder 8), a printed edict issued by the
Inquisition of Mexico against the proclamations for independence issued by Fr.
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, has been digitized and is
available online.
This collection is open and available for research use.

Almost the entire collection was purchased by J. Horace Nunemaker on behalf of the
State College of Washington Library. Part of the collection was purchased with funds
provided by the Early Birds Club, while the rest was purchased with funds from the
Friends of the Library and with funds provided by the University. The purchases in
Spain were made in 1939, and those made in Mexico were made between 1941 and 1944.
A printed notice issued on behalf of King Ferdinand VII and bearing his signature was
donated to the Library by Alfred C. Langdon, class of 1918.
