The United States Forest Service, part of the United States Department of Agriculture, increased efforts for forest fire prevention during World War II. Timber was an important asset for creating and sustaining military supplies. The campaign for fire prevention included Smokey Bear, and other educational pieces focused on individual responsibility for forest protection. At the local level, the State of Oregon Fire Service (part of the Oregon Department of Forestry) and the Keep Oregon Green Association focused on local fire prevention education and information.
