      <bioghist encodinganalog="5450_" id="a2">
         <p>Vivian Morgan Carkeek, son of Morgan and Emily Carkeek, was born
		  November 23, 1879. He was a member of the first class (1901) of the University
		  of Washington Law School. He went into legal practice upon receiving his degree
		  and was a partner in the firm of Carkeek, McDonald, Harris and Coryell. He was
		  active in Seattle civic and social affairs, and served as president of the
		  Seattle Historical Society. Carkeek was nominated for president of the UW
		  Alumni Association in 1923. He went on to teach at the University of Washington
		  Law School from 1930-1931. He started the Vivian Carkeek Prize, "for the best
		  student contribution to the <emph render="italic"> Washington Law Review </emph>
		  on a point of Washington law or any point of peculiar interest to Washington
		  attorneys," which the UW Law School continues to award, as of 2004.</p>

      <scopecontent encodinganalog="5202_" id="a3">
         <p>The Vivian M. Carkeek papers contain materials from his study of law
		  at the University of Washington, and from the courses he taught at the
		  university. Eight of Carkeek's notebooks from his time as a law student,
		  labeled by their subject matter, are found in the collection. Two other
		  notebooks contain information and notes about literature. These notebooks,
		  along with a large manual containing lesson plans related to title law, make up
		  the bulk of the collection. Other miscellaneous items include a copy of an
		  International Workers of the World (IWW) songbook, bylaws of the Selah Moxee
		  Canal Co., and a folder of clippings, book reviews, and other miscellaneous
		  writings by Carkeek.</p>
