  	<head>Biography of Tom Mahoney</head><p>Tom Mahoney (1905-1981) was a journalist and author. A graduate of the School of Journalism, University of Missouri, he worked as reporter and editor of several newspapers: "El Paso Post", 1927-1930, where he covered the Escobar Rebellion; United Press in Texas and Kansas, 1930-1934; and "Buffalo Times", 1934-1936. He was associate editor of "Look", 1937-1939, and "Fortune", 1943-1945, magazines. In the 1940s and 1950s he worked for Young and Rubicam and Dudley-Anderson-Yutzy. He wrote numerous non-fiction books including: "The Great Merchants" (1955), "The Merchants of Life" (1959), "The Story of George Romney" (1960), and "The Longest Auto Race" (1966) which was co-authored with George Schuster.</p>

  	<head>Scope and Content</head><p>The collection contains research materials related to early aviation and automobile transportation; these materials were used as background for Mahoney's writings. His manuscripts and research materials for several of his books and many articles are included. Photographs related to the 1908 New York to Paris six-month auto race with driver, George Schuster, and the Thomas Flyer and numerous aviation photographs (particularly around Randolph FIeld) of balloons, bombs, the Curtiss-Wright Corporation and its planes, Canadian World War I ace, Air Marshal William A. Bishop, and planes from many manufacturers are included. There is a large amount of printed materials related to NASA, aerospace, the National Aeronautic Association, and other organizations and publications from the aeronautical industry in the decades after World War II. Books written by Mahoney and many others are included as well as aviation newsletters, news releases up through 
 the 1970s. Clippings, reports such as Pan American Airlines annual reports, and periodicals are included.</p>
