      <p>Collection consists of a ledger containing census information for a school district in the area of Salem, Oregon. The words "School Census / Salem District / 1871" are handwritten on the cover of the ledger. The census lists the names of households; the number and sex of children under age 4; the number and sex of children between ages 4 and 20; and the number of voters in the household. Some pages are labeled with specific geographic areas, including South Salem, Country, North Salem, and Salem City. The ledger also includes a page with tallies of the census data for each area. Some pages near the center of the ledger appear to have been excised.</p>
