William "Bill" Tanner and Hertha Tanner grew up in Salt Lake City and Sandy, Utah. William became an oral surgeon and Hertha a homemaker. During the time these films were taken, the family was living in Hayward, California with their children Judy, Justin, Valen, Clelen, and Kylan.
The Tanner family home movies (circa 1960s) consist of family films from a variety of settings, people, and activities, mostly centered around Hayward, California. The films were taken by William and Hertha Tanner, who grew up in Salt Lake City and Sandy, Utah respectively. The films contain video of family gatherings, community events, and outdoor footage in various locations. All films have been digitized and are available to view on the DVD described in this finding aid.
Audio-visual materials can be fragile and require specialized equipment to play back. Family gathered in a room at or near Christmas time listening to a woman play piano while a man plays saxophone. Then a little kid plays piano and another little kid plays a xylophone. Another is in angel wins dancing, then there are a whole bunch of people both standing around and dancing. A man and woman dance while another woman plays the piano.
Boy scouts receive papers of some kind; they all stand in a line smiling and happy. Then they gather around a table and are seated, then stand with their parents seemingly receiving some kind of recognition. Four are dressed as Indians and dance around a totem pole, and then others are pushing themselves around on a cart. The rest who are seated seem very excited. A boy is dressed in a Halloween costume, then more in costume are shown.
A boy sits in front of the camera writing on a piece of paper with a book beside him. People get off an airplane and walk towards the camera. The next shot is in a park with many people on the swing set and sitting around. Next shot is outside of a street as cars go by. Next shot is of a pottery wheel, with a man in a suit and a woman talking while another person uses the wheel. The next clip shows children hanging onto a donkey and pulling it around, trying to get it to move.
A shot of rolling hills and then of pyramids of the Central and South American style. Shot of a little beetle crawling in the grass, very out of focus. Shot of children and women washing clothes in a trough-like river. Shot of children playing a game in the grass with paper headbands on, then dancing in a circle.
Shot of an area in a city with cars driving by, buildings pictured. One of the buildings says Banco Refaccionario De Jalisco S.A. Many people also walk along the sidewalks.
Children swimming in a river, there appear to be hut-like houses on the shore. Women are also washing clothes in the river. A woman walks to the river carrying a basket on her head, then the shot looks off the top of a building towards the coastline. There is an airplane pictured.
Mannequins are pictured in a storefront, then children on boards of some kind swimming after a fish in the water. People wade across a river holding their shoes. There is a man in a boat rowing across a river and the camera man looks form one side to the other. The next shots are from the water and picture another boat as well as coastline and homes, then another larger ship, and again back to the homes, which are on a beach.
William Tanner's falconry: A large bird is chained to a post what appears to be someone's front yard. It flies repeatedly onto a man's hand, then back to the post. It then flies from further away to his hand, this time it appears to be unchained. It is chained again in all the rest of the shots, which mostly show it sitting on a piece of wood.
First show is into a bay with a couple of boats in it, then of a choir of young boys who are singing. People walk around at what looks to be a fair, then two men play instruments. One appears to play a bagpipe, while the other plays something like a violin, although it is held upright. More shots of the fair. An older looking woman wearing sunglasses and a coat is at the wheel of a boat. There is a shot from the boat of a marina with many boats and a city in the background.
A man and a woman look to be getting married, an older man and woman stand near them. They both say things into the microphone, then a different man comes and stands next to the groom and also says things into the microphone, as do the older man and woman.
A woman holds a book, then gets up to get a folder from a file cabinet. An older man sits in a chair, then the woman walks through a hall. It appears to be a doctor's office of some sort. The woman again sits behind a desk like she was at the beginning. The man is doing dentist work on a younger boy, cleaning her teeth.
A woman behind the same desk as in the last film, and then sitting on a couch. The next shot is of a tree in a pot outside, along with other plants that appear to be in the ground. A man points at flowers and grabs some of them, still talking to the camera. The dentist from before stands with an older woman, putting his arm around her while they both talk to the camera, then they begin to dance. The older woman stands next to the younger woman who was sitting at the desk earlier in the film, and they converse.
