      <p>Ten engravings, some hand colored, by Robert Swain Gifford, excised from L. J. G. Runkle's chapter "Up and Down the Columbia" in Volume 1 of "Picturesque America: Or, the Land We Live In," edited by William Cullen Bryant (New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1872). The engravings depict Native people and landscape features along the Columbia River, primarily in the Columbia River Gorge. Scenes include Salmon Falls; Rooster Rock; Coffin Rock; river passage at The Dalles; Castle Rock (now known as Beacon Rock); Multnomah Falls; and Mount Hood. Includes duplicates of Mount Hood engravings.</p>
