The United States Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service unit at
Pullman, Washington, the Pullman Plant Materials Center was established in 1935, an
apparent descendant of the Department of Interior's Soil Erosion Service. Originally
known as the Pullman Nursery Unit, the present name was given to the organization in
the late 1940's. From its inception, the Pullman unit was the central office of a
number of similar stations in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. The primary function of
the several units is experimentation and development of range grasses. Additionally
they are also involved in a variety of related soil conservation projects.

The records include annual, technical and survey reports and miscellaneous
publications regarding soil conservation research and the development of range

The Annual Reports include printed and typescript copies of the annual reports of the
Pullman and Lind, Washington stations; the Moro, Pendleton, and Union, Oregon
stations; and the Sandpoint, Idaho station.

Many of the Technical Reports and Publications come from conferences and field days,
most are in the form of scholarly papers or public addresses. During the 1950's, the
Plant Material Center began the practice of incorporating most of these publications
into an annual technical report. Consequently, many technical reports issued after
1956 are located in the annual reports.

The Survey Reports include aerial photo surveys, of soil, water, and crop cover
surveys conducted by the Soil Conservation Service and various participating
agencies, among which were the Nursery Units.

The Miscellaneous Publications include public relations brochures of Plant Materials
Center and newsletters of the predecessor Soil Erosion Service.
