Edith Ashmore (Hensolt) (1882-1975) was born in China to Baptist missionaries, William, Jr. and Lida Scott. She and her brother Frank moved to the United States in 1895, where they were raised in a home for missionary children in Morgan Park, Illinois, outside Chicago.

Ashmore graduated from Vassar College in 1906, and later worked at the University of Chicago library. She married Charles Elder on August 10, 1916. They had two children, Rachel and Philip, and moved to Boulder, Colorado. Charles died May 22, 1935. Edith then relocated to Albany, Oregon, and later married Fred Hensolt.

Edith Hensolt was the primary person who gathered her family's papers together, and that collection was also donated to the University of Oregon Special Collections and University Archives, and is known as the Ashmore family papers, Ax 564. This collection of Edith Hensolt's personal papers is separate from her family's papers.

There are six volumes of diaries that contains almost daily entries. The date ranges are as follows: 1912-1916; 1917-1921; 1922-1933; 1935-1944; 1945-1949; and 1950-1954.

Correspondence files include personal letters (1896-1999) Hensolt wrote to her parents while she was a student in Illinois. There is also correspondence sent during 1900-1906 while she was a student in Ohio, and at Vassar. There are additional folders of correspondence written by Hensolt, to her parents, through 1933.

Folders that are labeled "Vignettes" contain recollections of travels Hensolt went on with her family, and at other times by herself, during the 1800's to Honolulu, Japan, China, and Mill Valley California shortly after the San Francisco earthquake.

The collection also contains photograph albums of trips to Japan (1880s), Vassar College (1906), photos of Granville, Ohio and Northpoint, M (?) (1901), and photos of Chicago University (1910).
