Eastern Washington University (EWU) saw the emergence of its first queer organization, the Gay And Lesbian Alliance (GALA), by 1984. The club began meeting in the Women's Center with the intention to serve the homosexual students of EWU. They moved their meetings to Monroe Hall and renamed themselves the Gay Lesbian Student Alliance sometime before January of 1986. Several name changes occurred over the years including the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Alliance and the Student Alliance For Equality (SAFE) until it became Eagle Pride sometime after 2002. The organization advocated for the better treatment of queer students on campus and hosted events by and for the LGBTQ+ community. Their most notable accomplishment was the creation of the Pride Center which officially opened in 2010 in room 105 of Showalter Hall. The Pride Center and Eagle Pride moved to the newly renovated Pence Union Building in 2019.
