         <p>Mrs. Altose came to Bellingham from Odessa in 1913 to live with a
		  cousin. She soon met her future husband, Max, and was married in 1913.</p>
      </bioghist>
      <scopecontent>
         <p>Oral history interview conducted by Karyl Winn.</p>
         <p>Mrs. Altose talks about the family business, a mattress factory
		  operated by her husband and his brothers in partnership with a Mr. Gurlick. She
		  mentions other families in Bellingham and their businesses and discusses
		  organized Jewish life in the community. She tells about the building of the new
		  schul, about the Hebrew schoool, how Kosher meat was obtained, how a local
		  chapter of Hadassah was organized, and how the cemetery was organized.
		  Describes the fire caused by lightning at the mattress factory. Mrs. Altose
		  died in Seattle 8/3/93 at the age of 103.</p>
