  	<head>Biography of John Edgar Breitenbach</head><p>John Edgar ("Jake") Breitenbach was a member of the American Mount Everest Expedition of 1963, which was the first successful American attempt to climb the mountain. Breitenbach, a mountaineer from Wyoming, was killed by an avalanche during the expedition.</p>

  	<head>Scope and Content</head><p>The collection contains letters exchanged while the expedition was being organized, as well as letters of condolence to Breitenbach's wife, Lou. Also included are photographs and newspaper clippings related to Breitenbach's mountaineering and death in 1963.</p>
