Utah Batteries A and B participated in the capture of Manila and the surrender of Spanish troops in 1898 during the Spanish-American War.</abstract>

      <p>The Utah Batteries A and B records (1898-1899) contain discharge payroll documents for members of A and B Batteries of Utah U.S. Volunteers. These records contain birthplace, physical description, occupation, and military information.  General payroll records are also included providing details of military pay, some additional military information about destinations, sickness, fines, etc., as well as the signature of each soldier. </p>
      <p>Also included in the records are general orders, to Major Richard W. Young, dated June 2, 1898, putting Young in charge of Utah A and B Batteries. Young was affiliated with Battery A, but was the senior officer of the two Batteries (A and B).</p>

    <bioghist encodinganalog="545">
      <p>Utah Batteries A and B of the Utah Volunteers were mustered in 9 May 1898 at Fort Douglas, Utah. The groups were under the direction of Richard W. Young, a West Point graduate and grandson of Brigham Young; and Frank Grant from the Utah National Guard. Initially Utah Volunteers numbered 425, but climbed to 800 by the end of the campaign. </p>
      <p>The Utah groups participated in the capture of Manila and the surrender of Spanish troops on 14 August 1898. Utah Artillery A and B left the Philippines 24 June 1899. They fought in over 100 engagements. Fifteen men in the group died from effects of fighting or disease. Fourteen were wounded.</p>
