Jacob Miller was the son of Daniel A. and Clarissa Pond Miller. He was born in Quincy, Illinois, in 1835. The family moved to Carthage where they remained until the death of the Prophet Joseph Smith. They emigrated to Utah in 1848 and settled in Farmington. Miller married his first wife, Helen Mar Cheney, in 1858, and left on a mission to Salmon River, Idaho, shortly thereafter. He served another mission in 1875, this time to Australia. Miller taught school for ten years, was manager of the Farmington Co-op, served in several bishoprics, and was set apart as a patriarch in 1906. Jacob Miller died on 11 October 1911. He left behind his two wives, Helen and Annie, and six children.

The Jacob Miller papers (1809-1960) are comprised of Jacob Miller's diary, correspondence, news clippings, and family diaries and biographical sketches. The main part of the collection focuses on Miller's diary, dating from 1809-1876. It details his early life near Carthage, Illinois, his migration to the Salt Lake Valley, his missions for the LDS Church, and his civic responsibilities. The collection also contains various newspaper clippings giving the history of the Salmon River Mission. The diary of James Thadeus Miller, Jacob's brother, describe the mission and surrounding countryside. Also present are biographical sketches by Annie Sophia Christensen, Jacob's second wife, for Hannah Bigler Miller, Karen Marie Hansen Anderson, and Maren Johanna Jensen Christensen. Two of Annie's notebooks while attending the University of Deseret are included as well.
