The first five years of Utah's statehood were plagued by political squabbles and infighting. Divisions between Republicans, Silver Republicans, Populists, and Democrats hampered the new State Legislature. Party divisions were so severe that the third legislature was unable to elect one of Utah's representatives to the United States Senate. Support for Frank J. Cannon, William H. King, Alfred W. McCune, and Orlando W. Powers produced a deadlock and Utah was represented by only one senator from 1899 until 1900.

The political news clippings collection (circa 1854-1920) consists of clippings relating to Utah's third legislature after statehood, national news regarding Utah, and general clipping regarding events that happened throughout the state. The Utah's Third Legislature collection was compiled by T. D. Johnson. The clippings, possibly from the
Salt Lake Tribune
describe the controversies surrounding this legislative body after statehood. Several folders of loose clippings, also on the third legislature, are included as well. The second scrapbook includes national news clippings regarding Utah collected from New York and Washington related to various events, politics, and anti-Mormon sentiments. The third scrapbook in the collection contains general news clippings about events within the state of Utah and was compiled by R. Forrester.
