Larry V. Shumway (1934-), from Arizona state, is an ethnomusicologist, teacher, author, and traditional fiddler. Shumway received his BA in music from Brigham Young University (BYU), his MA in Asian studies from Seton Hall University, and his PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Washington. In 1974, he was given a joint faculty appointment at BYU in the Department of the Humanities, Classics, and Comparative Literature and in the School of Music. He has conducted field work in American, Japan, and Kingdom of Tonga on various traditional music genres and dance forms --including Japanese Shinto ritual music, American traditional music, and Tongan national music, culture, and dance. Shumway has taught music and Japanese language. He is also a fifth generation fiddler, and has authored several books and articles about the fiddle.
