The materials in the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering collection include brochures, programs, newspapers, posters, and other materials distributed at the Cowboy Poetry Gathering (now the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering) in Elko, Nevada, hosted by the Western Folklife Center (1985 to present).
Collection materials are in English.
Open to public research. To access the collection a patron must have the following information: collection number, box number, folder number and item number. The materials do not circulate and are available in USU's Special Collections and Archives. Patrons must sign and comply with the USU Special Collections and Archives Use Agreement and Reproduction Order form as well as any restrictions placed by the collector or informant(s).
It is the responsibility of the user to obtain permission to publish from the owner of the copyright (the institution, the creator of the record, the author or his/her transferees, heirs, legates, or literary executors). Permission to publish material from the The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering collection must be obtained from the Curator of the Fife Folklore Archives and/or the Special Collections Department Head.
The materials in the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering Collection date from 1985 (when the first Cowboy Poetry Gathering was hosted in Elko, Nevada) to the present. Throughout the years, Fife Folklore Archives faculty and staff have deposited their programs and posters and other NCPG generated materials in the Fife Folklore Archives. In 1993 Randy Williams organized the items into a file collection. In 2005, Ashley Purser reviewed the programs and sorted them by year and boxed and foldered them and created this finding aid. In August of 2005, Randy Williams added the NCPG posters to the collection and updated the finding aid.

In 1985 the first Cowboy Poetry Gathering was held in Elko, Nevada, featuring cowboy poetry and songs. Since that time the gathering has achieved national notice and hosts thousands of cowboy poets & singers, folklorists, ranchers, speakers, and visitors each year. The name of the Cowboy Poetry Gathering changed to The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering during 2000-2001.
The materials in the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering Collection include brochures, programs, newspapers, posters, and other materials distributed at the Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada, hosted by the Western Folklife Center (1985 to present). The materials are housed in acid-free archival boxes (or map cabinet in the case of the posters) and folders in USU's Special Collections and Archives.

This year's theme was "The Wild Ride," Inspired by Walter Piehl's angelic Betsy aboard a bucking Blue Buttes artwork (featured on the special Wild Ride products), we're joyfully celebrating the thrill, inherent beauty, and grace revealed in the hard work of overcoming some of life's most difficult challenges. If life in the rural West has taught us anything, it's that you have to adapt to change if you're going to survive.
