Charles B. Peyton (apparently also known as Samuel Peyton) worked as a
game warden in Swan Valley, Montana during the early 1900s. On October 18,
1908, Peyton and a local ranch hand, Herman Rudolph, encountered a hunting
party from the Flathead Reservation. Peyton asked to see the party’s hunting
licenses and a disagreement concerning the documentation ensued. The argument
turned violent and Charles B. Peyton along with four of the Flatheads: Camille
Paul, Martin Yellow Mountain, Joe Stuee, and Joe’s young son, Pelasoway Stuee,
were killed. The deaths spurred a heated controversy resulting in an
investigation by local and federal authorities. The investigation continued
through 1915 but proved inconclusive.
