Henry Olin Cady (1857-1916) was a Methodist Episcopal missionary to China. He was born in Middlebury, Vermont, and educated at Northwestern University and Garrett Biblical Seminary, Evanston, Illinois.

Cady traveled to China in 1886. He was one of the founders of the West China Mission, and was stationed at Chungking and Chentu (Chengtu). He was married in 1894 to Hattie Yates.

The collection (1886-1904) contains copies of letters written from China.

The letters consist of photocopies of typed copies of excerpts from the original letters, which were later destroyed. The letters were intended to form an epistolary history of the West China Mission. There are about 300 letters on 249 sheets.

A paper finding aid consisting of a subject index is available in the Reading Room. Subjects include: anti-foreign activities, celebrations, costs of shipping and goods, social, employment, and sexual customs, diseases, evangelism, foreign powers, footbinding, prejudice, and infanticide (under girls), Japan, law, mission, officials activities, riots, superstitions, work reports, and the Yangtse floods.

Most of the letters are to Cady's mother, from Cady, and after 1894 also from Mrs. Hattie (Yates) Cady.

A few letters from other missionaries or administrative personnel are included.
