Martin Secker was founder of the Martin Secker Ltd. publishing house which operated
in London between 1910 and 1935, and became one of the most important literary
publishers of the twentieth century. The firm was best known for its publication of
literary fiction, literary criticism, translations of foreign literature, and
reprints of literary classics. Secker was responsible for producing the work of a
distinguished group of literary authors, including D. H. Lawrence, Thomas Mann,
Norman Douglas, and Henry James. Secker's firm was purchased in 1936 and renamed
Secker and Warburg. He stayed with the new company for two years. Ultimately, Secker
purchased Richards Press and continued his work in publishing until 1962.
