The Aetna Mining and Milling Co., Ltd. was formed by John Swan, Arvid Lofgren, F.J. Vlosek, Fannie Shaw, Gus Hedland, Carl Amonson, and Fred Johnson in 1915. This group established the company's by-laws, were the directors of the company, and owned over two-thirds of the capital stock. Aetna Mine was located in the Lelande Mining District in Shoshone County. Originally, Carl Amonson sold four lode-mining claims to the company: Royal Queen, Tunnelsite, Best Resort, and Prince Albert. This transfer of claims was settled at the company's first meeting, March 16, 1915, at its office in Burke, Idaho.

From 1915 to 1938 the presidents were: John Swan, Jas. Murphy, C.S. Stone, P.J. Maggy, and Henry Day. Day had been the manager of the company and a member of the board of directors; he was elected president in 1932.

To develop its property the Aetna levied twelve assessments. The Hercules Mining Company purchased all delinquent shares and by 1938 controlled the majority of the stock. At a special meeting on January 10, 1938, the decision was made to transfer all property to the Hercules, and dissolve the Aetna.

The records of the Aetna Mining and Milling Company span the years 1915 to 1938. Included are minutes of meetings, financial statements, correspondence, a stock ledger, cancelled stock certificates, assessment records, a financial ledger, a voucher register, check registers, and state and federal tax returns.

Related materials can be found in the records of the Hercules Mining Company.

This Manuscript Group contains five series: Records of the Board of Directors and the Stockholders, 1915-1938; General Correspondence and Related Records, 1927-1940; Capital Stock Records, 1915-1936; Financial Records, 1915-1938; and Tax Records, 1929-1938.

In the first series, Records of the Board of Directors and the Stockholders, the bound volume of meeting minutes also contains lists of stockholders, assessment notices, copies of delinquency notices, and sale of stock notices. A folder of records relating to meetings contains notices of meetings and of assessments, agendas, lists of stockholders, ballots, notes, reports of tellers, copies of minutes, proxies, proofs of publication, and progress reports by President Henry L. Day to the stockholders. There is also a folder of annual financial statements. Most of this series dates between 1926 and 1939.

General Correspondence and Related Records, the second series, contains only a folder of correspondence, alphabetically arranged, 1927-1929, and a folder of annual statements and reports for the Idaho Department of State and Inspector of Mines, 1931-1940. The reports for 1939-1940 show that the company was dissolved in 1938.

Capital Stock Records, the third series, includes a stock ledger, and cancelled stock certificates, 1915-1933, and assessment records, 1915-1936. The two folders of assessment records include assessment rolls, correspondence with stockholders, lists of stockholders, proofs of publication, delinquent lists, and similar records for assessments 1-12.

The fourth series, Financial Records, contains a ledger and a voucher register, 1915-1938, and check registers, 1931-1938. In the voucher register are figures reported to the state each year, 1916-1923, including cash on hand, stock in treasury, cash received for the year, and work to date.

The final series, Tax Records, 1929-1938, contains only state and federal tax returns.

Removal of bank statements, vouchers, assessment receipts, and paid checks reduced the bulk of this material by one cubic foot.
