Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Daniel Lawrence O’Hern was born on January 13, 1883 in Barum, Iowa to John and Mary O’Hern. He moved to Montana to begin his career as an attorney following his completion of law school at the State University of Iowa in 1908. Once in Montana, he settled first in Missoula, where he opened a practice. In 1910, he was elected to the Montana State Legislature from Missoula County. He moved to Glendive, Montana in 1913 and served there as an assistant county attorney for two years. As a prominent Democrat, O’Hern was appointed judge of Montana’s 7th judicial district by Governor Samuel Stewart in 1915. His jurisdiction covered Dawson and Custer counties, and he served in that capacity until 1921. O’Hern then moved to Miles City, Montana, where he returned to practice as city attorney and corporate council to Greyhound Bus Lines and the Montana-Dakota Utilities Company. In 1938, he was also appointed to the Montana State Highway Commission. O’Hern retired in 1945 due to ill health.
He married Elizabeth Coleman in 1931. Daniel O’Hern died on September 4, 1949 in Miles City.
