<p>Professor of civil engineering and chairman of the Department of Civil
Engineering at the University of Washington.</p>
<p>Robert Graham Hennes was born in Michigan in 1905. He received a B.S.
degree in civil engineering in 1927 from the University of Notre Dame. In 1928,
he received a M.S. degree from M.I.T. and became the senior engineering aid to
the assistant engineer for the city of Detroit, a position he held until 1934.
That year he came to the University of Washington (UW) as an instructor in
civil engineering until 1937. Professor Hennes continued on at UW as assistant
professor from 1937-1941, associate professor from 1941-1947, and professor
from 1947-1973. Dr. Hennes then became a professor emeritus of Civil
Engineering. Hennes served on various university, state and national groups,
most notably as chairman of the Division of Economic Studies for the Highway
Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences, chairman of the Washington
State Council for Highway Research, and chairman of the University of
Washington Transportation Research Group. Hennes was also a prolific writer and
		  co-authored the textbook "Transportation Engineering."</p>
