Biographical Note

Albert Gerrit “Al” Londema was born on February 9, 1901 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, to Saartje Egberdina Fortanier and Luitje Londema. At an unknown date Londema immigrated to the United States and settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. On October 6, 1926, he married Dolly Mae Heiner (1907-1975) in Salt Lake City, Utah; together, they had one daughter. After Dolly Londema’s death in 1975, Al Londema remarried to Norma Luella Briggs Green (1902-1983) on June 14, 1976. Londema worked as a salesman for the Mine and Smelter Supply Company. After retiring from this job, he worked as a security guard for Centennial Bank. He also volunteered for the Friendly Neighborhood Center.

Beyond his career in sales, Londema was an avid amateur photographer and filmmaker who was active in Salt Lake City’s amateur filmmaker and cinephile communities. Londema was associated with the Amateur Cinema League, the International Wide Screen Association, and with the Utah Cine Arts Club. Over the years of his association with the Utah Cine Arts Club, Londema served as an officer in several capacities, including treasurer and president. In 1952, Londema received an Honorable Mention from the American Cinematographer Amateur Movie Makers Contest. In addition to numerous shorts, Londema produced and directed the 1951 independent western film
The Black Satchel
, filmed in southern Utah.

Albert G. Londema died on April 8, 1993, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
